David Clayton-Thomas, qui a été le chanteur de Blood, Sweat and Tears durant leurs années les plus fastes, est décédé paisiblement à Toronto mardi. Il avait 84 ans.

Un communiqué de presse a confirmé le décès sans toutefois en préciser la cause. Clayton-Thomas avait rejoint le groupe en 1968 après le départ de son chanteur original, Al Kooper.

Sa voix de baryton a contribué au succès de titres tels que Spinning Wheel, You’ve Made Me So Very Happy et And When I Die. L'album éponyme du groupe, sorti en 1968, a dominé le classement Billboard pendant sept semaines et a remporté le Grammy Award de l'album de l'année.

Né David Henry Thomsett à Surrey, en Angleterre, en 1941, il a grandi à Toronto et a par la suite été intronisé au Panthéon de la musique canadienne. Il laisse dans le deuil ses filles Ashleigh Clayton-Thomas et Christine Graham.

Un concert commémoratif au profit de Peacebuilders Canada est prévu.
