David Clayton-Thomas, der Blood, Sweat and Tears während ihrer erfolgreichsten Jahre als Frontmann anführte, starb am Dienstag friedlich in Toronto. Er wurde 84 Jahre alt.

Eine Pressemitteilung bestätigte den Tod, nannte jedoch keine Ursache. Clayton-Thomas trat der Band 1968 bei, nachdem deren ursprünglicher Frontmann Al Kooper die Gruppe verlassen hatte.

Seine Baritonstimme trug maßgeblich zu Hits wie „Spinning Wheel“, „You’ve Made Me So Very Happy“ und „And When I Die“ bei. Das gleichnamige Album der Gruppe aus dem Jahr 1968 führte die Billboard-Charts sieben Wochen lang an und gewann den Grammy für das Album des Jahres.

Geboren als David Henry Thomsett im Jahr 1941 in Surrey, England, wuchs er in Toronto auf und wurde später in die Canadian Music Hall of Fame aufgenommen. Er hinterlässt seine Töchter Ashleigh Clayton-Thomas und Christine Graham.
