Drivers fined for ignoring Eriksberg frog-migration road closure

Police have issued fines to drivers who ignored the nighttime closure of Eriksbergsvägen in Uppsala, a measure put in place to let frogs, toads and newts cross safely during their spring migration.

Uppsala Municipality closes the stretch of Eriksbergsvägen between Granitvägen and Ekebyvägen every evening from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. during the amphibian migration season. The restriction, which began in late March and is now scheduled to remain in effect until mid-May, directs traffic via a signed detour.

On several nights in late April, officers fined roughly 20 motorists who drove through the closed section. Police returned on Wednesday evening and issued further tickets after residents reported repeated violations.

Last year’s closure helped save thousands of animals; the municipality continues the effort this spring to reduce roadkill on the busy route.
