Lee Jae Myung, Prabowo set for summit on defense cooperation

President Lee Jae Myung is set to hold summit talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday. The discussions will focus on bilateral ties, with defense industry cooperation high on the agenda. A deal to export 16 KF-21 fighter jets is anticipated.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in Seoul on Tuesday for a three-day state visit, marking his second meeting with President Lee Jae Myung after their talks on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju on Nov. 1, 2025.

The summit is expected to emphasize expanding defense industry cooperation, particularly the joint development of the KF-21 fighter jet. Lee has described the KF-21 as a "model example" of global defense cooperation. South Korea plans to sign a deal exporting 16 KF-21 jets to Indonesia, its first overseas sale of homegrown fighter jets.

The leaders will also discuss strengthening South Korea's ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), along with security issues on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East, according to presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung. Indonesia, a key ASEAN member with the world's fourth-largest population and abundant natural resources, is viewed as a strategic partner for South Korea.
