Former Steeler Merril Hoge expressed optimism about the team's direction under new head coach Mike McCarthy, predicting the franchise could capture a seventh Super Bowl title in the coming years.
Hoge made the comments Friday during an appearance on the Straight Facts Homie! podcast. He described the foundational changes implemented by McCarthy as essential steps forward.
"I think all the things that are being implemented and planted are just fundamental, foundational pillars that are going to develop, they’re gonna bring the seventh Super Bowl to the Steelers, eventually," Hoge said. He noted that success is unlikely this season but praised the new energy McCarthy has introduced.
The Steelers hired McCarthy after Mike Tomlin's departure following a 10-7 season. The roster features young talent on the offensive line, added depth at receiver and running back, and secondary additions including Jamel Dean and Jaquan Brisker.
A franchise quarterback remains the key missing piece, with Aaron Rodgers on the roster and developing options like Drew Allar and Will Howard in place. Hoge believes Pittsburgh is close to contention despite that gap.
