Michael Stipe a interprété sa nouvelle chanson 'I Played the Fool' en direct dans l'émission Jimmy Kimmel Live le 2 juin. L'ancien chanteur de R.E.M. était accompagné par Andrew Watt, Chad Smith et Josh Klinghoffer pour cette apparition.

Le morceau sert de thème musical à la série HBO Rooster, qui met en vedette Steve Carell et a été lancée en mars. Stipe a sorti la chanson en mars, marquant son premier nouveau morceau en trois ans.
