De nouvelles accusations fédérales ouvrent la voie à la peine de mort pour le suspect de la fusillade à Washington

Les procureurs fédéraux ont ajouté huit nouveaux chefs d'accusation contre Rahmanullah Lakanwal, l'homme accusé d'avoir tué un membre de la Garde nationale et d'en avoir blessé un autre à Washington, D.C. Ces charges le rendent passible de la peine de mort en cas de condamnation.

Les procureurs ont déposé l'acte d'accusation modifié mardi. Il inclut le meurtre d'une personne assistant un officier américain et l'usage d'une arme à feu lors d'un crime violent ayant entraîné la mort. Un grand jury fédéral a déterminé séparément que Lakanwal avait intentionnellement tué la spécialiste de l'armée Sarah Beckstrom et tenté de tuer plusieurs personnes.

Le ministère de la Justice a déclaré que son Comité des affaires capitales réexaminera la possibilité de requérir la peine capitale. Lakanwal, un ressortissant afghan, a plaidé non coupable de tous les chefs d'accusation lors d'une audience le même jour.

Il est accusé d'avoir tendu une embuscade à des membres de la Garde nationale de Virginie-Occidentale en novembre dernier près de la Maison-Blanche. Beckstrom est décédée et le sergent de l'armée de l'air Andrew Wolfe a été grièvement blessé. Deux autres militaires l'ont maîtrisé par la suite.

Lakanwal est entré aux États-Unis en 2021 dans le cadre de l'opération Allies Welcome après avoir travaillé avec les forces américaines, notamment la CIA, en Afghanistan.
