Nya federala åtal väcker möjligheten om dödsstraff för misstänkt i D.C.-skottlossning

Federala åklagare har lagt till åtta nya åtalspunkter mot Rahmanullah Lakanwal, mannen som anklagas för att ha dödat en medlem av Nationalgardet och skadat en annan i Washington, D.C. Anklagelserna gör att han kan dömas till döden vid en fällande dom.

Åklagare lämnade in det utökade åtalet på tisdagen. Det inkluderar mord på en person som bistår en amerikansk tjänsteman samt avlossande av skjutvapen under ett våldsbrott som leder till döden. En federal storjury har separat fastställt att Lakanwal avsiktligt dödade arméspecialisten Sarah Beckstrom och försökte döda flera personer.

Justitiedepartementet meddelade att deras kommitté för dödsstraffsärenden kommer att utvärdera om dödsstraff ska yrkas. Lakanwal, som är afghansk medborgare, nekade till samtliga anklagelser vid en förhandling samma dag.

Han anklagas för att ha bakhållit medlemmar ur West Virginia National Guard i november förra året nära Vita huset. Beckstrom avled och flygvapnets stabssergeant Andrew Wolfe skadades livshotande. Två andra militärer lyckades senare övermanna honom.

Lakanwal kom till USA 2021 inom ramen för Operation Allies Welcome efter att ha arbetat med amerikanska styrkor, inklusive CIA, i Afghanistan.
