SMHI warns of thunder and wind across Skåne

A powerful thunderstorm with hundreds of lightning strikes moved into Skåne on Sunday morning. SMHI has issued a yellow warning for the entire region.

SMHI reported that the thunderstorm moved in over Öresund and Malmö heading northeast. In half an hour the agency counted between 300 and 400 lightning strikes, with peaks just under a thousand per half hour in the most intense areas.

Meteorologist Katarina Andersson described the activity as unusual for Sweden. The warning applies during Sunday morning and includes risk of strong wind gusts, storm gusts and local hail.

The weather follows record heat and SMHI predicted temperatures could exceed 30 degrees later in the day. Showers may continue in the afternoon as the cloud cover breaks up.
