South Korean football chief Chung Mong-gyu to step down after 2026 World Cup

Chung Mong-gyu, president of the Korea Football Association, said Friday he would step down after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Chung Mong-gyu said in a statement that he intends to step down as president of the KFA after this World Cup. He added that he will do his utmost to support the national team so that it can achieve results in the tournament.

The KFA said Chung's decision came despite his reelection to a fourth term in February last year with 85.6 percent of the vote. He has led the association since becoming its 52nd president in 2013.

Chung plans to formally submit his resignation following the World Cup final on July 19. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, kicks off on June 11.
