정몽규 회장은 5월 29일 성명을 통해 “이번 월드컵 이후 KFA 회장직에서 물러날 것”이라고 말했다. 그는 “대회에서 좋은 성적을 낼 수 있도록 국가대표팀을 지원하는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 덧붙였다.
KFA는 그가 지난해 2월 85.6% 득표로 4선에 성공했음에도 이번 결정을 내렸다고 설명했다. 그는 2013년부터 KFA를 이끌어왔다.
그는 7월 19일 월드컵 결승전 이후 공식 사임서를 제출할 계획이다. 월드컵은 6월 11일 미국·캐나다·멕시코 공동 개최로 시작된다.
