Tung Wah College to undergo April review for university status

Professor Sally Chan, president of Tung Wah College, announced plans to adopt the name Hong Kong Tung Wah University if approved. The 16-year-old institution based in Ho Man Tin will undergo an institutional review in April, having received the blessing of authorities. Chan expressed confidence, stating the college has exceeded minimum requirements.

Tung Wah College, a 16-year-old institution based in Ho Man Tin, is seeking university status through two applications announced by its president, Professor Sally Chan Wai-chi. Speaking at a spring reception with the media on Thursday, Chan revealed that the applications, set for institutional review in April, have obtained the blessing of authorities.

"We are very confident. We know we have reached the level the review required, or rather, we have exceeded the minimum requirements. It’s impossible for us to only meet the minimum requirements," said Chan, an internationally renowned scholar in nursing education and research.

To qualify as a university in Hong Kong, an institution must secure programme area accreditation (PAA) in at least three fields of study, demonstrate research capability, maintain at least 1,500 degree-level students over two consecutive academic years, and achieve institutional review status. Tung Wah College obtained PAA in occupational therapy in 2020, biological sciences in 2024, and applied social sciences in 2025.

If approved, the college plans to adopt the name Hong Kong Tung Wah University. The outcome of the April review will determine its upgrade.
