L'université de Nairobi nomme un nouveau vice-chancelier dans un climat de protestations

L'université de Nairobi a nommé le professeur Ayub Njoroge Gitau au poste de vice-chancelier à l'issue d'une réunion extraordinaire du conseil d'administration le 14 mai 2026. Cette décision a suscité des protestations immédiates de la part de ses rivaux, qui affirment qu'elle contrevient à des ordonnances judiciaires en cours. Cette nomination met fin à des mois de direction par intérim au sein de la plus ancienne université du Kenya.

Le conseil de l'université a approuvé la nomination de Gitau en tant que neuvième vice-chancelier titulaire lors de sa session de jeudi. Il a également nommé le professeur Josiah Omollo Aduda au poste de vice-chancelier adjoint chargé des finances, de la planification et du développement. Le conseil a salué le travail de la vice-chancelière par intérim, la professeure Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, pour avoir guidé l'institution durant cette transition.

Le professeur Duke Omondi Orata a condamné cette décision. Il a déclaré à Kenyans.co.ke que le conseil avait agi en violation d'ordonnances judiciaires émises en janvier 2026, lesquelles avaient gelé le processus de recrutement. Orata a indiqué qu'il engagerait des poursuites pour outrage au tribunal et a souligné que l'affaire doit être mentionnée le 26 mai 2026.

Le litige relatif à la direction remonte à des cycles de recrutement antérieurs menés par la Commission de la fonction publique. Orata prétend qu'il aurait dû être sélectionné après le retrait du professeur Bitange Ndemo en 2025. L'université fait face à une instabilité depuis le départ de l'ancien vice-chancelier, le professeur Stephen Kiama, en septembre 2024.
