Energy cooperation builds new momentum in Europe-China ties

Marking the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations in 2025, Bernardo Mendia, Secretary General of the Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told China News Network in an exclusive interview that Portugal and China have forged a successful partnership in wind, solar, and ocean-related sectors, with bilateral trade exceeding USD 9.2 billion in 2024.

In an exclusive interview with China News Network, Bernardo Mendia, Secretary General of the Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, discussed the evolving relationship between the two countries. He noted that Portugal and China have built a solid collaboration in wind, solar, and ocean-related industries. This partnership has driven robust bilateral trade growth, exceeding USD 9.2 billion in 2024.

Mendia added that China is shifting from low-cost exports to high-tech, high-quality products. To foster a more balanced relationship, Chinese companies are investing in factories in Europe. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal defended the newly concluded India-EU free trade agreement against domestic criticism, emphasizing its benefits for economic growth. The deal addresses key issues like carbon tariffs and mobility for professionals. However, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed disappointment, accusing Europe of prioritizing trade over support for Ukraine.
