Glen Schofield announces retirement after 35 years

Glen Schofield, co-creator of Dead Space and former co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, has announced his retirement from game development in an emotional video posted on LinkedIn.

Schofield said the decision follows more than 35 years of making and directing games.

"After 35 years of making games and directing them, running teams, it's time for me to officially retire from the day-to-day work," he stated in the video.

He thanked EA for the opportunity to create Dead Space, Activision for three Call of Duty titles, his family including wife Barb, and fans who provided feedback over the years. Schofield also expressed optimism about the industry's future despite current challenges.

His most recent major project was The Callisto Protocol in 2022. In 2023 he left the studio he founded and later pitched a fourth Dead Space game to EA without success.

Microsoft cut 3200 jobs at Xbox on July 6 as part of the largest restructuring in the division's history. Half the reductions took effect immediately, with the rest scheduled through June 2027. Four studios are leaving the company through spin-offs or sales.

Treyarch has announced that studio head Mark Gordon is retiring after more than two decades with the Call of Duty developer. The move follows his long tenure that included leadership on multiple major titles in the franchise.

Producer and writer Chuck Beaver has said a fourth Dead Space game is unlikely because the numbers do not add up. His comments come after creator Glen Schofield expressed hope for a new entry last year. The 2023 remake sold just over two million copies.

id Software has pushed back against reports that recent Xbox layoffs have severely reduced its workforce. Co-studio director Hugo Martin addressed the concerns during a recent livestream.
