Haile Gebrselassie reflects on 25 years of Great Ethiopian Run

In a candid interview with Capital, legendary athlete Haile Gebrselassie shares reflections on the 25th anniversary of the Great Ethiopian Run (GER). Since starting in 2001, GER has grown from a simple dream into a national celebration of unity and health, transforming running into an accessible activity for all Ethiopians. Haile highlights its role in building a running culture and envisions further expansion across Africa.

The Great Ethiopian Run (GER) began in 2001 under Haile Gebrselassie and his colleagues, inspired by European-style running events. Initially focused on elite athletes, it has now become inclusive for families, students, and office workers. In the interview, Haile recalls, “The first race in 2001... I won it, which makes it unforgettable.”

Since its start, over 760,000 people have participated. Through the Run For a Cause campaign, GER has raised 100 million birr, supporting health, education, and community development projects, especially for children and youth. The event has expanded to cities like Hawassa, Jimma, Bokoji, Arba Minch, and new races in Debre Birhan and Harar this year, fostering a national running culture and boosting local tourism. Haile states, “GER has become one of Ethiopia’s most recognizable international events, a positive story the world loves to tell.”

For the 25th anniversary, special features include Silver Jubilee medals, artistic visuals, and programs honoring early participants. Haile highlights memorable moments like his victory in the inaugural 2001 edition and his final competitive race in 2015, where he ran 100 meters barefoot to honor Abebe Bikila. Looking ahead, Haile envisions GER as Africa's leading platform for community fitness and sports tourism, aiming for a million participants at the 50th anniversary. This event not only promotes athletic talent but also enhances Ethiopia's global image through sport, unity, and joy.
