Hideo Kojima has expressed sadness over Sony's plan to end production of PlayStation game discs in 2028. The Metal Gear creator spoke at a film festival in Italy about concerns over digital ownership and streaming services. Sony confirmed the move on July 1, with re-orders allowed for games released before the cutoff.
Kojima addressed the topic while at the Il Cinema in Piazza film festival. He said production ending in 2028 is sad because he grew up with physical media. Kojima noted he has been buying Blu-rays and CDs.
He warned that a shift to streaming could leave users without ownership of data. Kojima explained that companies control servers and access could be cut off due to changes in nations or politics. He added that what happens to games in 2028 might also affect movies.
Sony is telling developers they can place re-orders for existing disc games after January 2028 if those titles release before the cutoff. The company also said it will allow new games at retail using digital codes.
Microsoft responded by highlighting physical discs for Halo: Campaign Evolved. The company stated that retail purchases will include a full disc and case for collection purposes.
