Kangaru Girls High School students stage strike in Embu

Students at Kangaru Girls High School in Embu County staged a strike on March 22, protesting the punishment of a girl who allegedly misused a fire extinguisher during entertainment. The incident followed a similar unrest at neighboring Kangaru Boys High School. Authorities are working to restore order.

Students from Kangaru Girls High School in Embu County left the premises in large groups and headed toward Embu town amid heavy rains, according to videos and photos obtained by reporters. Witnesses reported that the students destroyed school property, and some police officers who intervened sustained injuries. The strike reportedly stemmed from the punishment of one girl who allegedly misused a fire extinguisher during a weekend entertainment session. Police intercepted some students in Embu town and escorted them to Moi Stadium for containment. On Sunday night, dozens of girls were seen on the streets, likely heading home in the downpour. This followed a similar strike by students at neighboring Kangaru Boys High School on Saturday night, when learners walked along the Embu–Meru Highway, disrupting traffic. As of publication, neither the school nor police had issued a statement, with residents calling for dialogue among students, administration, and security agencies. The event adds to ongoing school disruptions reported since the start of the year. On February 4, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stated that the ministry had launched a crackdown in several counties, collaborating with the Education Ministry to monitor unrest and address property destruction.
