The NBA has reinstated veteran referee Eric Lewis to its officiating program after his 2023 retirement amid a social media investigation. Lewis will start officiating at the NBA G League Winter Showcase this weekend, following completion of required counseling and training. The league views his past actions as not impacting his on-court integrity.
Eric Lewis, a 54-year-old referee from Daytona Beach, Florida, retired in August 2023 while the NBA investigated him for potential violations of its social media policy. The probe centered on a deleted burner account under the handle @CutliffBlair on Twitter, now X, which responded to criticism of NBA officiating. Lewis had used the account to defend himself against detractors, an action that breached league rules.
On December 19, the NBA announced Lewis's reinstatement as an NBA G League official. He fully cooperated in the investigation and met benchmarks including stress management counseling and training on responsible social media use. During his 19-year NBA career, Lewis officiated 1,161 regular-season games and 91 playoff contests, including six NBA Finals games. Prior to the NBA, he refereed three seasons in the G League and played basketball at Bethune-Cookman University.
In the intervening two years, Lewis officiated NCAA men's basketball games. NBA President of League Operations Byron Spruell praised his record, stating, “Over nearly 20 years, Eric established himself as one of the NBA’s premier game officials. While he made a mistake in engaging on social media, our investigation concluded that his behavior did not impact his ability to officiate games fairly and with integrity. We are confident he has learned from that experience and can properly serve the game again, first as an NBA G League official and potentially in a return as an NBA official.”
Lewis expressed remorse in a statement to ESPN: “It started very small and got out of hand. I don’t feel happy about the situation and how far it went. But I’m very apologetic to the family and to the league. This won’t happen again, and I’m just ready to get back to doing the work.”
The reinstatement introduces a seasoned official back into the fold, though Lewis must demonstrate ongoing compliance to potentially return to NBA games as early as this season. The NBA emphasized that his social media activity did not compromise his impartiality, aiming to maintain trust in its officiating program amid potential fan concerns.
