The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-handed reliever Ron Marinaccio from the San Diego Padres on Wednesday in exchange for international signing bonus pool money.
Pittsburgh also designated reliever Dennis Santana for assignment to clear roster space. Marinaccio, 31, had posted a 4.79 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 33 appearances for the Padres this season.
The move adds experienced right-handed relief depth ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Marinaccio has held left-handed hitters to a .197 batting average over his career and primarily relies on a four-seam fastball and changeup.
Santana had struggled in 2026 with a 6.05 ERA over 44 games after stronger prior seasons with the Pirates. The team has sought additional late-inning options to support pitchers such as Gregory Soto and Mason Montgomery.
