South Korea signs deal to export additional Chunmoo launchers to Estonia

South Korea has signed a deal to export three more Chunmoo rocket launchers to Estonia. The agreement follows a long-term framework between the two countries.

The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency announced on May 11 that it had signed a government-to-government contract with the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments. Under the deal, Hanwha Aerospace will deliver three Chunmoo launchers and related equipment by the end of 2027.

The agreement follows a framework pact signed in December. At that time, KOTRA committed to exporting six Chunmoo units and three types of missiles for 300 million euros.

KOTRA President Kang Kyung-sung said the swift follow-up contract reflects the strong performance of Korean weapons systems and Estonia’s trust in the Korean defense industry.

South Korea and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday to strengthen bilateral shipbuilding cooperation. The deal forms part of a trade agreement under which Seoul pledged $150 billion in U.S. shipbuilding investments.

Hanwha Aerospace Co. said Thursday it has joined the Estonian Defence and Aerospace Industry Association (EDIA) as the first South Korean member. The company aims to deepen ties with Estonian firms through joint R&D and supply chain cooperation. It builds on supplies of K9 howitzers in 2020 and Chunmoo systems in late 2025.

South Korean weapons systems are often sold overseas under different names, reflecting localization efforts and industrial partnerships with purchasing nations. For instance, Hanwha Aerospace's K239 Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system is known as Homar-K in Poland, while the K9 self-propelled howitzer is called K9 Vidar in Norway.

President Lee Jae-myung and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk are set to hold summit talks on Monday. The leaders will discuss expanding bilateral cooperation, focusing on the defense industry. Tusk's visit marks the first by a Polish prime minister in 27 years.
