The New York Yankees are exploring a backup plan in case they fail to re-sign free-agent outfielder Cody Bellinger, with former Cincinnati Reds player Austin Hays emerging as a potential target. Reports indicate the Yankees have checked in on Hays, who had a solid season despite injuries. This move would provide an inexpensive option for the crowded Yankees outfield.
The New York Yankees are prioritizing the re-signing of Cody Bellinger, acquired from the Chicago Cubs in a December 2024 trade, but they are preparing alternatives amid the free-agent market. Bellinger had a strong first season in the Bronx, hitting .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs, backed by his resume of two All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger Awards, and a Gold Glove.
According to The New York Post's Jon Heyman, Austin Hays could serve as Plan B. "The Yankees also have checked in on Austin Hays. Hays becomes more realistic for them if they are unable to retain their No. 1 target Cody Bellinger," Heyman noted on X. The 30-year-old Hays, a one-time All-Star in 2023, offers versatility across all three outfield positions. He debuted with the Baltimore Orioles in 2017 and posted career highs of 22 home runs and 71 RBIs in 2021.
Hays was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies before the 2024 MLB deadline and signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Reds ahead of 2025. In 103 games that year, he batted .266 with 15 home runs and 64 RBIs, achieving a .768 OPS. However, injuries limited his play, including three injured list stints and late-season back spasms. The Reds declined his $12 million mutual option in November, paying a $1 million buyout and sending him to free agency.
Heyman added that the Mets have internal interest in Hays, describing him as a "righty hitting OF" and potential fit after his "very nice year in Cincy." The Kansas City Royals also remain interested. While the Yankees have been linked to elite outfielder Kyle Tucker, who could command $400 million, and Bellinger near $200 million, Hays represents a cost-effective addition. He would join an outfield featuring Aaron Judge, Trent Grisham, Jasson Dominguez, and prospect Spencer Jones.
