Lucid announces Nvidia partnership for consumer autonomous vehicles

Lucid, the electric vehicle startup, has partnered with Nvidia to develop autonomous driving technology for consumer vehicles. The collaboration aims to deliver a level 4 autonomous system and use AI to optimize production lines. This move comes as Lucid expands its lineup with more affordable models.

Lucid, formed by former Tesla engineers, announced on October 28, 2025, a collaboration with Nvidia to integrate the company's hardware and software into future electric vehicles. The partnership focuses on creating a "true eyes-off, hands-off, and mind-off" autonomous driving system for consumer-owned cars, targeting level 4 autonomy, which allows self-driving within defined areas like geofences without human intervention.

Lucid's interim CEO Marc Winterhoff stated, "We’ve already set the benchmark in core EV attributes with proprietary technology that results in unmatched range, efficiency, space, performance, and handling. Now, we’re taking the next step by combining cutting-edge AI with Lucid’s engineering excellence to deliver the smartest and safest autonomous vehicles on the road. Partnering with Nvidia, we’re proud to continue powering American innovation leadership in the global quest for autonomous mobility."

Initially, Lucid will enhance its partially automated driving assist for the Gravity SUV using Nvidia's Drive AV platform. For its upcoming midsize crossover, expected in 2027 with a starting price under $50,000, the company plans to incorporate two Nvidia Drive AGX Thor computers. This setup mirrors level 4 systems from Waymo and Zoox but targets individual owners rather than fleets.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang commented, "As vehicles evolve into software-defined supercomputers on wheels, a new opportunity emerges—to reimagine mobility with intelligence at every turn. Together with Lucid, we’re accelerating the future of autonomous, AI-powered transportation, built on [the] Nvidia full-stack automotive platform."

Beyond vehicles, Nvidia's industrial platform will enable Lucid to design production lines digitally, optimizing robot paths, improving safety, and reducing commissioning time. Lucid, known for the efficient Air sedan, aims to scale sales to tens of thousands annually for profitability, with driver assists like GM's Super Cruise seeing 40 percent uptake after trials.
