Luis Arraez stated Monday that he will only play second base if traded by the San Francisco Giants before the August 3 deadline. The four-time All-Star emphasized his preference during comments in Philadelphia.
The 29-year-old batting champion signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the Giants this offseason after previous stints with the Twins, Marlins and Padres. He has started 406 of 759 career games at second base and ranks in the 99th percentile with 10 Outs Above Average there this season.
Arraez is batting .330 with a .369 on-base percentage, four home runs and 35 RBIs. The Giants sit at 41-55 and trail the Dodgers by 19.5 games in the NL West.
“This is a business, so whatever team wants to give me the opportunity to help, it's going to be at second base,” Arraez said. “One hundred percent, I’m staying at second.”
He added that relationships with teammates like Willy Adames and Logan Webb make potential trades difficult but that he will listen to any team offering a chance at his preferred position.
