Amazon MGM Studios' Masters of the Universe reboot is expected to open to $30 million domestically and $50 million worldwide. The film arrives after nearly 18 years of development by Escape Artists and Mattel Studios.
Producers Robbie Brenner, Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal described the long path that began when Mattel let rights lapse at Warner Bros. nearly two decades ago. Black and Blumenthal secured the project for Sony within 24 hours after a call from agent Spencer Baumgarten. The script later moved to Amazon MGM Studios, where Courtenay Valenti approved it during her first week on the job. Travis Knight was chosen to direct after the Nee brothers had been attached earlier. Tom Rothman suggested placing He-Man on Earth as a fish-out-of-water story. Nicholas Galitzine stars as He-Man alongside Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Alison Brie and Jared Leto as Skeletor. Previews begin Thursday at 2 p.m. in the United States, with the film playing in 86 territories including the UK, Germany, Brazil and China.
