RWE considers buying additional Amprion shares

The Essen-based energy company RWE plans to acquire another large stake in grid operator Amprion. A consortium led by Ärzteversorgung Westfalen-Lippe intends to sell its holding.

Two people familiar with the matter confirmed to Handelsblatt that RWE wants to buy the stake. Through a joint venture with US asset manager Apollo, RWE currently holds 25.1 percent of Amprion.

The planned purchase of the 16.5 percent stake from Ärzteversorgung would raise RWE's ownership to more than 40 percent. The transaction volume is expected to be in the low single-digit billions.

Amprion operates a significant part of Germany's electricity transmission network. Investments in such grids are considered politically relevant in Germany, as they represent critical infrastructure that must be expanded for the energy transition.
