Sheinbaum sends senate reform to postpone judge elections until 2028

President Claudia Sheinbaum sent a constitutional reform initiative to the Senate on Wednesday to move judicial elections from 2027 to 2028. The proposal seeks to refine candidate selection following criticisms of the 2025 polls.

Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez and legal counsel Luisa María Alcalde delivered the bill to the Senate. The initiative includes creating a coordinating commission from the three branches of government to verify aspirant requirements.

It also proposes cutting candidates to four per post and holding a lottery to select two finalists. If approved, voting would occur on June 4, 2028 and could coincide with the president's recall referendum.

The National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges described the measure as an admission of the original design's unviability. The group called the changes insufficient to prevent repeats of issues such as elected judges' proximity to the ruling party.
