The Constitutional Points Commission approved an initiative adding foreign interference as grounds for annulling elections and postponing the judicial election until 2028.
The reform promoted by Ricardo Monreal was approved with 28 votes in favor and 9 against. It was sent to the floor of the Chamber of Deputies for discussion.
Opposition deputies criticized the ambiguity of the term foreign interference. Nadia Navarro Acevedo of the PRI said reports or statements could be used as a pretext for nullity.
The majority bloc defended the measure to protect electoral processes. Ricardo Astudillo of the PVEM noted that Mexico's destiny should not be decided outside the country.
The initiative modifies article 41 of the Constitution. It was also approved by 29 votes in favor to postpone the judicial election from 2027 to 2028.
