China rejects EU's discriminatory restrictions on Chinese inverters

China has firmly rejected the European Union's designation of it as a high-risk country and its move to restrict funding for projects using Chinese inverters, calling the steps groundless and discriminatory.

The Ministry of Commerce spokesperson made the remarks on Thursday in response to media reports about EU plans. Without concrete evidence, the EU has for the first time labeled China a high-risk country and banned funding for projects using Chinese inverters.

The spokesperson said this constitutes stigmatization and subjects Chinese products to unfair treatment. The move will undermine mutual trust, disrupt bilateral cooperation, and threaten the stability of China-EU and global supply chains.

The actions violate market principles and fair competition, the spokesperson added. They harm Chinese companies and will backfire on the EU by affecting its green transition and energy security.

China urges the EU to cease the practice and withdraw the measures. It will closely monitor the impact and take necessary steps to protect the lawful rights of Chinese enterprises.

China's commerce ministry has threatened investigations into the EU or its businesses and reciprocal measures in response to the European Union's January 2026 cybersecurity proposal, which could designate China a 'cybersecurity threat' and list firms like Huawei and ZTE as 'high-risk suppliers' for mandatory removal from 5G networks. The warning comes amid the EU's push to phase out such vendors from telecom, hi-tech sectors, and critical infrastructure within three years.
