Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR) has identified several Kenyan nationals killed while fighting for Russia near Borova village in the Kharkiv region. The group died in a Ukrainian mortar strike. Several Kenyan families have appealed to the government to trace their loved ones missing in Russia.
Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR) reported that a group of Kenyans deployed by the Russian military near Borova village in the Kharkiv region died after a Ukrainian mortar strike.
Among the identified is Eric Mwangi Nyambura, born in 2003, through the “I want to leave” hotline project encouraging surrenders.
The others are Joseph Kamau Wanjiru, Joel Ngure Karithi, and Ronald Kipkirui Kibet, who traveled together in October 2025, signed contracts, underwent brief training, and were sent to war.
HUR stated Nyambura was initially a radio operator but later moved to an assault unit and killed on the frontline.
The agency has identified nearly 3,000 African nationals who signed contracts with Russia, with Kenyans among the highest numbers.
The largest groups come from Kenya, Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Algeria, Mali, South Sudan, and South Africa.
Over 316 Africans fighting for Russia were killed as of August 2025, with the actual number possibly higher.
Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs reports at least three Kenyans confirmed dead, two held in captivity, and 16 missing.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi recently met Russian authorities, who committed to stopping recruitment of Kenyans and aiding repatriation, though frontline positions pose hurdles.
The revelations have brought deep pain to families seeking greener pastures in Russia.
