Alberto Vázquez’s ‘Decorado’ wins best feature at 9th Quirino Awards

Alberto Vázquez’s ‘Decorado’ claimed the best feature film prize at the 9th Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. The Spanish-Portuguese co-production marks Vázquez’s third win at the event. Colombia and Portugal also secured major category victories.

The awards ceremony took place on Friday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where a jury reviewed 265 submissions from across Ibero-America. Spain led with three wins, while Colombia, Portugal and Brazil each took two, and Argentina one, evenly splitting honors between the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. The jury was chaired by Brazilian producer Cesar Cabral, joined by members from Ireland, the Philippines, Colombia and Croatia. Alberto Vázquez, a Galician animation director, won best feature film for ‘Decorado’, a film exploring identity and societal appearances. Produced by Spain’s María y Arnold AIE, Abano Producións, UniKo, Glow Animation and Portugal’s Sardinha em Lata, it also received an animated feature Goya Award in February. This is Vázquez’s third Quirino prize, following short films ‘Decorado’ in 2018 and ‘Homeless Home’ in 2021. Colombia’s Careloko Producciones won best series for ‘There Is Something Behind You – Season 1’, directed by Julián Gómez Reyes and supported by the Abrecámara public fund. Portugal’s Marta Reis Andrade took best short film for ‘Dog Alone’, a 2D animation produced with France’s Ikki Films that has screened at festivals including AFI Fest. Other winners included Colombia-Spain co-production ‘Ballad of Fishes and Birds’ for school short film, Portugal’s ‘Paulinha’ for music video, Brazil’s ‘18 Months’ for commissioned film, and Spain’s ‘Stars in the Trash’ for video game animation.
