The Walt Disney Company is facing a proposed class action lawsuit over its recent rollout of facial scanning technology at Disneyland and other California theme parks. The $5 million suit claims the biometric system was deployed without adequate consent and raises concerns about data privacy, particularly for minors.
Disney began using the facial scanning at park gates in late April to speed up entry and reentry while preventing unauthorized pass use. Visitors can opt out, though lines without scanning are longer. The company converts photos to numerical values for comparison and deletes the data within 30 days unless fraud or legal issues arise. Children under 18 require a parent or guardian's consent for scanning.
