Hijra bank has made the first zakat donation in the history of Ethiopia's financial institutions to the zakat and waqf commission. The event took place under the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council. The donation comes from the bank's 2017 annual profit.
On Ketit 24, 2018 (Fana Media), in Addis Ababa, Hijra Bank donated the first zakat amount in the history of Ethiopia's financial institutions to the Zakat and Waqf Commission. The bank, which provides fully interest-free banking services, contributed 8 million 182 thousand Birr as zakat payment.
This system was established under the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, marking the bank's formal commitment to zakat donations. The ceremony was attended by Sheikh Haj Ibrahim Tufa, president of the Supreme Council; board members of the Zakat and Waqf Commission; the bank's Sharia advisors; representatives of the Supreme Council; and other stakeholders.
The donated funds come from the bank's recorded 2017 annual profit, with allocation made by deducting Ramadan Zakat from the general budget in a practical Iftar tradition. The Zakat and Waqf Commission was formed under the Supreme Council in the previous Sene month. This action highlights cooperation between the bank and the commission.
