Man charged with girlfriend's murder after shooting her in front of children

Zachary Fuqua faces second-degree murder charges in Michigan after allegedly shooting his girlfriend Erika Sanders in the back of the head in front of her three children. Authorities say he gave the children candy and said 'Here y'all babies go' before fleeing the scene. Fuqua was arrested nearby and held without bond.

On March 17, at around 5:30 p.m., Zachary Fuqua, 39, allegedly entered the home of his girlfriend, 38-year-old Erika Sanders, on Sterling Street in Warren, Michigan, about 20 miles north of Detroit. Three of Sanders' four children were present when Fuqua shot her in the back of the head, according to authorities cited by WDIV and Macomb County jail records reviewed by Law&Crime. Police found Sanders lying face down upon arrival and arrested Fuqua nearby after he fled the residence. Before leaving, Fuqua reportedly acknowledged the children by giving them candy and saying, 'Here y'all babies go.' Assistant Macomb County prosecutor Jonathan Mycek stated in court proceedings, 'The defendant had no qualms with shooting his significant other in the back of the head in the presence of three minor children.' Days earlier, on March 14, Fuqua posted on Facebook, 'Going out with a bang,' which authorities noted amid reports of his struggles. A judge ordered Fuqua held without bond in Macomb County Jail, with his next court appearance scheduled for April 1.
