Missouri man charged with fatally shooting girlfriend during argument

Demario McGee faces second-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the neck outside a Kansas City residence, police say. The incident occurred early Sunday morning amid an argument where McGee reportedly felt emasculated. Katrice Williams, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kansas City police responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on East 62nd Street around 3 a.m. Sunday, where they found 32-year-old Katrice Williams suffering from a gunshot wound to her neck in the backyard near a gold Chevrolet Traverse. Paramedics declared her dead at 3:18 a.m., according to a probable cause statement from the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office. Authorities arrested 37-year-old Demario McGee at the scene, describing him as acting erratically and yelling that someone had shot his girlfriend, the statement says. Witnesses in the basement recording studio reported hearing three shots and seeing McGee walk away briefly before returning. They noted he often carried a 9 mm handgun and had arrived to use the studio. McGee told detectives during a custodial interview that he and Williams, who were homeless and sleeping in the vehicle, argued after she refused to come inside from the car. He said he felt emasculated by her words and fired the FMK 9 mm into the air to scare her as she tried to leave, but the gun discharged accidentally into her neck. McGee admitted to running a few houses away and discarding the weapon. House occupants corroborated hearing an argument followed by gunshots, with one seeing a man in a light-colored hoodie fleeing. McGee faces one count of second-degree murder and two counts each of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. He is held at Jackson County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
