Mega Crit unveils Aeonglass boss designs for Slay the Spire 2

Developer Mega Crit has shared details on the creation of Aeonglass, the new Act 3 boss in Slay the Spire 2 that replaced Doormaker last month.

Animator Chris Gortz described the process in a Steam blog post, noting that the team explored concepts including a multi-faceted pillar of death before settling on an hourglass-inspired design.

Five different takes on the killer hourglass were considered, with option B selected after debate. Gortz tested simulations of 3D rotating metal rings in 2D space to advance the idea.

Art director Marlowe Dobbe requested that the contents move like Lava Lamp goo rather than sand, leading to the use of a smoke shader from the Living Smog boss. The most recent beta patch has already adjusted Aeonglass with nerfs to front-loaded damage and changes to some animations.

Slay the Spire 2 remains in early access on Steam, with a full release not expected until 2027 at the earliest.
