In the Dodgers-Mets series finale, as previewed amid shoulder soreness that sidelined him from hitting, Shohei Ohtani dominated on the mound with 10 strikeouts in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 8-2 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night. The loss extended the Mets' skid to seven games.
Ohtani allowed one run and two hits over six innings, generating a Dodgers career-high 22 swing-and-misses. He struck out the side in the sixth on just 14 pitches. "It was really good to watch him just focus on one thing," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "Tonight he was unusually good."
Ohtani's streak of 28 2/3 scoreless innings ended on MJ Melendez's RBI double in the fifth, after which he touched 100 mph. Dalton Rushing, starting as DH in Ohtani's place, delivered a grand slam in the eighth. "He told me to hit a homer for him," Rushing said.
Ohtani's MLB-best 48-game on-base streak—now the longest by a Japanese-born player, topping Ichiro Suzuki's 43—remains active. This marked his first mound start without batting since May 28, 2021, with the Angels. Roberts expects Ohtani to resume two-way duties next outing.
