Overwatch 2 launches January 2026 midseason patch

Blizzard has released a midseason update for Overwatch 2 Season 20, introducing a new game mode variant and numerous hero balance adjustments. The patch, version 2.20.1, serves as a full rebase across all platforms, resulting in larger download sizes particularly for consoles. Players can expect fresh gameplay twists starting this week.

The update arrives on January 8, 2026, marking a significant refresh for Season 20. As a rebase patch, it requires substantial downloads, especially on consoles, to overhaul the game's foundation.

A highlight is Showdown Shuffle, running from January 13 to 26, where heroes shuffle mid-match alongside rotating wild modifiers to heighten chaos. These include effects like heroes becoming 50% smaller with 30% reduced health, invisibility while crouching (detectable at close range), quick melee knockbacks, vampiric healing without passive regeneration, increased aerial damage with lower gravity, faster respawns, damage boosts from health packs, speed enhancements from lost health, super jumps, explosive deaths, 30% movement speed boosts, and periodic buffs to random heroes that players can steal by elimination. Completing challenges during this event yields cosmetics, loot boxes, and Battle Pass XP.

Quick Play: Hacked brings back classic Assault maps from January 8 to 11 in 5v5, 6v6, and Mystery Heroes queues. Later, Junkrat’s Loot Hunt returns January 22 to 25, offering loot boxes via in-game challenges.

Hero balance changes span tanks, damage, and supports. For tanks, Doomfist's Empowered Punch now deteriorates after 20 seconds, with its Power Matrix area scaled to match his model; Extended Boosters damage reduced to 40%; Roadhog's Whole Hog pellet damage up from 6 to 7. Ashe's Viper secondary fire falloff shortens to 35-55 meters, ammo gain cut to 1. Bastion's Recon damage drops to 23. Genji gains 30 shuriken ammo. Illari's Solar Rifle max damage rises to 75, min to 25. Lucio's Soundwave cooldown extends to 5 seconds. Moira's ultimate cost decreases by 7%, and Zenyatta's Discord Orb amplification increases to 30%.

Bug fixes address issues like D.Va's perk misapplication, Cassidy's pinging, aim assist on pets, and more across heroes and modes.
