Former IPS officer R N Ravi took oath as the 22nd governor of West Bengal at Lok Bhavan on Thursday. Chief Justice Sujoy Paul of the Calcutta High Court administered the oath in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The appointment follows the resignation of his predecessor C V Ananda Bose on March 5.
R N Ravi, who previously served as governor of Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tamil Nadu, took oath as the governor of West Bengal on March 12, 2026. The ceremony was held at Lok Bhavan, where Chief Justice Sujoy Paul of the Calcutta High Court administered the oath.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee, senior minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, and Left Front chairman Biman Bose were present. No leaders from the opposition BJP attended the event. Senior bureaucrats, including Chief Secretary Nandini Chakravorty, and senior police officers also participated.
Ravi had completed a 54-month tenure in Tamil Nadu. His appointment came after C V Ananda Bose's resignation on March 5. Sources indicate this change marks a significant step in the state's political activities, though no controversial statements were made.
The governor's role in West Bengal is constitutional, aiding coordination with the state government. Ravi's prior experience across diverse states positions him well for the position.
