Rick Moranis received a standing ovation at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for the Spaceballs sequel. He revealed that discussions for a follow-up began in 1989.

Rick Moranis told attendees that he started talks for a sequel back in 1989. "I really wasn't retired. I was just negotiating," he said.

The panel focused on "Spaceballs: The New One." Josh Gad called the project a "love letter to John Candy" and confirmed he is playing a mawg but not the role of Barf.

Keke Palmer is cast in the film but declined to discuss her character. Lewis Pullman spoke about the experience of working with his father, Bill Pullman, on the project.

Giant combs were used by troops to guard the Hall H stage during the session.
