Veteran playback singer S. Janaki died at age 88 in Mysuru on July 11 after developing health complications. She was admitted to Apollo Hospital early that morning but did not respond to treatment and passed away in the evening, family sources said. The singer had been living in Bogadi, Mysuru, for several years.
Tributes poured in from film personalities. Former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said her voice found a home in every Malayali heart. Actor Kamal Haasan wrote that the song will forever keep resounding.
Born in Pallapatla village in Andhra Pradesh, Janaki won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Senthoora Poove in 16 Vayathinile. Her mortal remains will be kept at Maharaja’s College Grounds for public homage, with last rites to be conducted with full state honours.
