Women leading thug gangs in Kisii political clashes

Six women and one man were arrested after an attack on a political convoy in Keumbu.

The attack took place last Friday in the Nyaribari Chache area. It resulted in one death, injuries to several others and damage to vehicles, including one carrying former Chief Justice David Maraga.

The arrests have sparked debate about the Ebirongo group operating in the area. The group was started as a youth mobilization squad but now includes women.

A 31-year-old woman said she joined Ebirongo in January this year and was paid Sh1,000 per day. Other women cited hardship and unemployment as reasons for joining.
