Wyoming man charged with murder in girlfriend's infant daughter's death

John D. Haney, 41, faces first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges after his girlfriend's 10-month-old daughter died from asphyxiation last year. Security footage captured a scream and showed Haney in a bathroom doorway before the video cut off. He called 911 claiming to find the child unconscious.

Laramie County Sheriff's Office arrested John D. Haney on Friday in Cheyenne for the March 2025 death of his girlfriend's daughter. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Cap City News, a motion-activated home security camera recorded what is believed to be the child's scream about 30 minutes before Haney dialed 911. The footage showed a dog triggering the camera, followed by the sound, and captured Haney standing in the bathroom doorway moments later, with no recording of him exiting the room. Haney told investigators the infant was fussy, so he laid her down for a nap, went to the bathroom for 10 minutes, and returned to find her unresponsive and cold, the affidavit states. First responders rushed the girl to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined the cause as asphyxiation, ruling the manner homicide. She also suffered fractures in one arm and both legs, which doctors described to detectives as 'highly concerning' and indicative of abuse, though not the direct cause of death. Police had investigated the case over several months before Haney's arrest. He remains in custody on a $1 million cash bond and faces a probable cause hearing within 10 days if he does not post bail.
