Air Supply to headline Hong Kong's New Year countdown

Australian soft rock duo Air Supply will headline Hong Kong's New Year countdown on December 31, joining Cantopop stars Jay Fung and Cloud Wan. The event replaces the cancelled fireworks display at Victoria Harbour. It combines live performances and light shows to spread positive energy and blessings.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board announced on Tuesday that Australian soft rock duo Air Supply will headline the New Year's Eve countdown on December 31, performing alongside Cantopop singers Jay Fung and Cloud Wan. This follows the board's decision last week to cancel the traditional fireworks display at Victoria Harbour, though no reason was provided.

The 40-minute event will take place at the Chater Road pedestrian zone in Central, featuring a new format that combines live performances by renowned singers and a light show. The board stated: “The event will feature a brand-new format combining live performances by renowned singers and a light show, aiming to spread positive energy and heartfelt blessings.”

Eight building facades in the business district will be illuminated with immersive projections, including a giant countdown clock and festive patterns, creating a three-minute display themed “New Hopes, New Beginnings.”

Authorities anticipate more than 11 million travellers crossing Hong Kong's borders during the festive period. The government said on Tuesday it is in discussions with Shenzhen authorities to extend border crossing hours on New Year's Eve, pending approval from national port authorities.

This shift highlights Hong Kong's innovative approach to New Year celebrations, focusing on music and visuals to engage visitors.
