Björklinge residents complain about noisy rooks as municipality starts action plan

Residents in Björklinge have been disturbed for several months each year by rooks nesting in the trees. Uppsala Municipality is now responding to the complaints and will begin work on an action plan next week.

The rook colony consists of about a hundred pairs that return to their nests every year. During the breeding season in spring the noise becomes so disturbing that residents have joined forces to report issues to the municipality.

– We moved from Uppsala to sit on the patio in peace and quiet. That did not happen, says Agneta Ohlson Melin.

Babs Stuiver, head of unit for forest and nature at Uppsala Municipality, says the municipality has great understanding for the disturbance. Next week they will begin work on an action plan ahead of the 2027 breeding season.

Rooks are protected in Sweden, so the municipality will examine measures from other places in Europe, such as removing nests to make the birds move on.
