Families fleeing Trans Mara clashes seek urgent aid

A humanitarian crisis is escalating in Angata Barikoi, Trans Mara, Narok County, following communal clashes that killed four people. Displaced families are sheltering in schools and police stations, lacking basic necessities. The Red Cross is calling for aid to support them.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat declared Angata Barikoi a no-go zone due to ongoing clashes between communities. Displaced people fleeing the violence continue to wander without food, water, or medicine. Many families are now taking refuge in schools and police stations.

Felix Maiyo, a representative of the Red Cross in the Southern Rift Valley, described the situation as dire, urging immediate assistance for the affected families. “We do not have enough food and other items. We need food for the children and people with various disabilities,” Maiyo said. He added, “As Kenyans celebrate Christmas, we ask them to remember these struggling families and provide aid.”

Maiyo called on security forces to ensure no further killings occur, noting that many remain afraid to return home. Some victims stated they have lived in the area since birth and that the clashes have upended their lives. For instance, 56-year-old Edna Chelangat, a mother of seven, is now at Kondamet Primary School after her home in Orgilai was attacked. “I feel like I have nothing and I don’t even know why I’m here. I have lost everything,” she said.
