Film Istimewa spotlights struggles of disabled children

Film Istimewa directed by Ruben Adrian is generating buzz on social media ahead of its September 17 2026 release.

The film places children with disabilities as main characters on a meaningful journey to find a father figure. Their personalities are depicted as diverse with dreams, courage and a unique view of the world.

Ruben Adrian said the film was designed to offer a new perspective on disabled children. He noted it was born from real stories of his disabled friends.

"What makes Istimewa so meaningful for us is because this film was born from various real stories that we heard directly from our Istimewa friends," said Ruben Adrian.

Mathias Muchus who plays Pak Mahendra added that the film reminds viewers of a broader meaning of family.
