On Friday afternoon, five crew members fell overboard from an 8,580-ton cargo ship sailing off the southwest coast of Seogwipo on Jeju Island. The vessel had ten people aboard at the time of the incident, which occurred about 33 kilometers southwest of Seogwipo Port.
According to Coast Guard officials, the report was filed at 4:47 p.m., prompting the immediate dispatch of rescue boats and a helicopter to the scene. The crew members, who had boarded a life raft, were all safely rescued by around 5:52 p.m. Initial reports indicated that four had been rescued, but the latest update confirms all five were retrieved without injury.
The rescued individuals, all foreign nationals, are in stable condition and are being transported to nearby hospitals. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. This incident highlights ongoing maritime safety concerns in the Jeju waters.
