Kenya and India have nurtured strong partnerships for years, formalized by a 2016 memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kenya. In 2017, then-President Uhuru Kenyatta's trip to India emphasized enhanced defence ties and maritime security. Between 2013 and 2014, the nations conducted a joint hydrography survey in Kenyan waters after an Indian navy visit to Mombasa port.

The JDCC was established in 2019 to provide a formal platform for strategic discussions. In 2023, they issued a joint maritime vision statement titled 'BAHARI,' aiming for a stable and secure Indian Ocean region. Defence seminars have continued to explore military hardware manufacturing and maintenance, medical and training support, and information sharing.

With the 2026 JDCC meeting on the horizon, defence relations between Kenya and India are poised to expand through regular visits, joint trainings, capacity building, and joint efforts to address shared security challenges.
