Kenya and India deepen defence collaboration after strategic talks

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are strengthening defence ties with India following a strategic meeting in Nairobi. Discussions focused on joint military training, defence industry cooperation, medical training, and border security management. Representatives from both nations agreed on a joint framework to enhance security and stability.

A strategic meeting held at the defence headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, marked an important step in bolstering ties between the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and India. The Indian delegation, led by Navy Captain Velagada Shirdikant, the Indian defence attaché to Kenya, highlighted the value of collective military engagements. He noted that both countries face similar security challenges and reaffirmed India's dedication to partnerships that support border security, stability, and peace.

The talks centered on an agenda for the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting scheduled later this year. Participants agreed to sustain future cooperation and outlined a joint framework to advance defence collaboration.

Kenya and India have nurtured strong partnerships for years, formalized by a 2016 memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kenya. In 2017, then-President Uhuru Kenyatta's trip to India emphasized enhanced defence ties and maritime security. Between 2013 and 2014, the nations conducted a joint hydrography survey in Kenyan waters after an Indian navy visit to Mombasa port.

The JDCC was established in 2019 to provide a formal platform for strategic discussions. In 2023, they issued a joint maritime vision statement titled 'BAHARI,' aiming for a stable and secure Indian Ocean region. Defence seminars have continued to explore military hardware manufacturing and maintenance, medical and training support, and information sharing.

With the 2026 JDCC meeting on the horizon, defence relations between Kenya and India are poised to expand through regular visits, joint trainings, capacity building, and joint efforts to address shared security challenges.
